Researchers at UCI Created History

University of California, Irvine researchers have proved it again that why they stand above in the queue along with all Researchers in the world. UCI researchers have invented such a great thing which the running world would need much.
UCI chemists create battery technology with off-the-charts charging capacity which is going to make a remarkable change in the world of rechargeable batteries it sounds exciting. UCI doctoral candidate Mya Le Thai has developed a nanowire based technology that allows lithium-ion batteries to be recharged hundreds of thousands of times.
We have seen all the great Inventions coming into existence accidentally. Let it would be the discovery of gravity, where great scientist Newton was seating under a tree and discovered the concept with which the whole world is depended now, the kitchen microwave and many more. There is an old saying that luck happens when preparation meets opportunity and what Mya le Thai has proved it.
Mya le Thai have to play a lot around the research chemistry lab in UCI which lead to discovery of rechargeable Battery which last long than 400 years. A team in UCI had been experimenting nanowires potential use in battery. Usually Charging a laptop battery means a complete cycle of charging it full to completely empty and back to full again and this takes around 300 to 500 charge cycles.
The original idea of the experiment was to make a solid-state battery, one that uses an electrolyte gel, rather than liquid, to help hold charge. Liquid batteries, like the common lithium variety, are extremely combustible and sensitive to temperature. The Irvine team was experimenting by substituting a much thicker gel. But one day , Thai coated a set of gold nanowires in manganese dioxide shell and encasing the assembly in an electrolyte made of a Plexiglas-like gel. The combination is reliable and resistant to failure.
“She started to cycle these gel capacitors, and that’s when we got the surprise,” said Reginald Penner, chair of the university’s chemistry department. “She said, this thing has been cycling 10,000 cycles and it’s still going to 200,000 times over three months without detecting any loss of capacity or power and without fracturing any nanowires”, She came back a few days later and said ‘it’s been cycling for 30,000 cycles.
This is unbelievable that how can a battery can never lose any energy. Where as a normal Battery of laptop needs 300 to 500 charge cycles. This Discovery would lead to extend the life of Battery of laptop upto 400 years and whereas the other devices it seems to be that it will never finish.
“The big picture is that there may be a very simple way to stabilize nanowires of the type that we studied,” Penner said. “If this turns out to be generally true, it would be a great advance for the community.”
